Why is the screw pump fluid leakage?

Leakage of Progressive Cavity Pumps

Leakage is a common fault during the operation of progressive cavity pumps, which is mainly related to four factors: sealing structure damage, assembly errors, component wear, and abnormal working conditions.

The specific causes can be classified as follows:

1.screw pump Seal Failure (the mechanical seal wear and damage),This is the most common cause of leakage. The shaft end seals (e.g., mechanical seals, packing seals) of progressive cavity pumps are the core components to prevent medium leakage.

1)Mechanical seals: Wear, scratches, or cracks on the friction surfaces of the rotating and stationary rings, as well as aging, deformation, or damage to the sealing elements (O-rings, bellows), will prevent the sealing surfaces from fitting tightly, leading to leakage.

2)Packing seals: Wear, loosening of the packing, or uneven compression force of the gland will cause the medium to seep out from the gap between the shaft and the packing.

2.Problems with the Pump Body or Connection Parts

1)Manufacturing defects such as sand holes and cracks in the pump body casting, or damage to the pump body due to pressure and corrosion after long-term operation, will directly cause leakage

2)Aging, deformation, misalignment of the sealing gaskets at connection parts such as the inlet and outlet flanges and pump cover, or loosening of bolts, will result in poor sealing at the joints and cause leakage.

3.Wear of screw pump Stator and Rotor or Excessive Fit Clearance

The stator (made of rubber) and rotor (made of metal) of a progressive cavity pump are the core flow-through components, which need to fit closely to form a sealed chamber.

1)Long-term transportation of particle-containing media will accelerate the wear of the stator inner wall and rotor surface, leading to increased fit clearance and medium leakage through the gap.

2)Swelling, aging, or cracking of the stator caused by excessive temperature will also damage the sealing effect and trigger leakage.

4.Assembly and Installation Errors

1)Excessive coaxiality deviation between the pump shaft and motor shaft will cause eccentric vibration during operation, leading to uneven stress on the seals, accelerated wear, and subsequent leakage.

2)Insufficient fixation of the pump body during installation will cause vibration during operation, which affects the sealing performance of the sealing surfaces and connection parts.

5.Abnormal Working Conditions

1)The actual working pressure of the pump exceeding the rated pressure will impose excessive load on the sealing system and pump body, causing seal failure or pump body damage.

2)High corrosiveness or temperature of the conveyed medium will accelerate the aging and damage of the seals, stator, and pump body, resulting in leakage.
