How to perform daily inspection and maintenance of screw pumps for sludge transportation with sediment and sand?

Daily Inspection & Maintenance Checklist((For operators to follow directly))

1. Pre-start Inspection (Must do every time)

  1. Ensure no large stones, branches or debris in the feeding tank; clean the grille if blocked.
  2. Check suction pipeline for air leakage, pipe collapse and flange leakage.
  3. No dry running start: Fill the pump with water first; start only when the pump cavity is fully filled with medium.
  4. Start at low speed via frequency converter; avoid full-load direct start.
  5. Confirm inlet and outlet valves are fully open with no pipeline blockage.

2. Running Inspection (Once every 2 hours)

  1. Listen for abnormal noise, impact sound or dry friction sound; reduce speed or stop immediately if abnormal.
  2. Monitor current and pressure: keep stable without sharp fluctuation.
  3. Check pump temperature and vibration; overheating or obvious shaking indicates eccentric wear.
  4. Observe discharge flow: sudden flow drop usually means sand blockage or stator partial wear.
  5. Check shaft seal / packing seal for heavy leakage; adjust gland properly if leaking.
  6. Do not run long-term under low flow & back pressure — it accelerates stator and rotor wear severely.

3. Standard Shutdown Procedure (Daily routine)

  1. Stop feeding first, do not shut down immediately.
  2. Inject clean water to flush the pump cavity for 3–5 minutes to wash out internal sediment and avoid hard deposition & seizing.
  3. Shut down after all sand and sludge are flushed out.
  4. For long-term shutdown: drain all medium inside the pump to prevent sediment from damaging the stator.

4. Daily Maintenance

  1. Clean inlet grille and filter; remove stones and impurities.
  2. Check coupling concentricity; correct offset in time (eccentricity causes fast one-side rotor wear).
  3. Check reducer lubrication and loose abnormal noise.

5. Weekly Maintenance

  1. Inspect packing / mechanical seal; refill or replace when worn.
  2. Tighten all pump and pipeline flange bolts to prevent air ingress.
  3. Clean sediment in the feeding tank to avoid repeated sand suction.

6. Monthly Inspection (Maintenance staff)

  1. Dismantle to check stator inner wall for groove, rubber peeling or cracks.
  2. Inspect rotor surface coating / hardened layer for wear and peeling.
  3. Check reducer oil level and oil quality; replace oil if deteriorated.
  4. Verify VFD low-speed parameters; keep speed at 80–180 r/min for sediment sludge.

7. Three Strict Rules (Greatly extend service life)

  1. No dry running / idling / running without material.
  2. No high-speed operation for sediment sludge.
  3. No hard large particles entering the pump directly; pre-filtration is mandatory.
